Our friend, Monica said, “You’ve had an amazingly lucky year, and an amazingly unlucky year.” I guess that’s life, isn’t it?
Brian and Lauren’s daughter, Alice Rose Deery, arrived on 6-28. Cailin and Jack’s son, Kieran Joseph Mears, on 10-20 – lucky. We were able to spend Alice’s week 3 through 5 at our cottage on Bois Blanc Island – lucky – but haven’t been able to meet Kieran in Oxford, England – unlucky.
We bought a new cottage on Bois Blanc Island in Michigan providing room for all the Deerys and Mears to meet up there during the balmy summer months – lucky.
It wasn’t Covid that stopped our trip to England to meet Kieran in late November – it was a serious medical issue – very unlucky. Kevin developed a rare and puzzling blood clot, diagnosed while we were on a trip to Florida. Pile on top of that a major complication following the procedure to address the clot. Poor guy was in two different hospitals for 14 days, 3 of them in the ICU.
But, throughout this saga, we dodged a couple bullets. Twice we were just a stone’s throw away from the ER’s that saved his life – very, very lucky.
At this point, Kevin is getting wonderful medical attention, including from a team at Duke – lucky. We’re still walking the golf course, swimming twice a week, riding our bikes when the weather allows, and enjoying our beautiful friends – all so very lucky.
Here’s to more lucky, and less unlucky in 2021.
